Interdisciplinary Research Institute on Bio-Nano-Sciences of Babeş-Bolyai University was founded in 2001, under the name of Interdisciplinary Experimental Research Institute, as autonomous research and technological transfer unit. Its aim is to carry out interdisciplinary research in the most topical scientific and technological themes, belonging to Biosciences, Nanosciences and to the physical and chemical processes that took places at natural and nanostructured artificial systems interfaces. At the same time, our goal is to transfer the results obtained to potential local, national and international beneficiaries.
Monthly took place scientific seminars where invited speakers, international recognized specialists are presenting the last news in the fields of interest for intitute members.
Interdisciplinary Research Institute on Bio-Nano-Sciences organizes together with Faculties of Physics, Chemistry and Biology the International Conference “Advanced Spectroscopies on Biomedical and Nanostructured Systems”. The Honorary Presidents of these conferences were Prof. Richard Ernst (2004), Prof. Ahmed Zewail (2006) and Jean-Marie Lehn (2011) Nobel Prize Laureates.
Interdisciplinary Research Institute on Bio-Nano-Sciences (IRI-BNS) comprises research centers and laboratories listed below.
- Molecular Biology Center
- Nanostructured Materials and Bionano interfaces Center
- Nanobiophotonics and Laser Microspectroscopy Center
- Molecular Structure and Dynamics Center
- Environmental Radioactivity and Nuclear Dating Center
- Genetic Counselling Center

They keep their autonomy regarding research topics and contracts, on one hand, and financial resources and equipment, on the other hand. Each laboratory has its own research and support staff. Their number depends on the funds from research grants and services to different companies.
